Reflected Moonshine
Reflected Moonshine
Artist: Jennifer Peterson
The ephemeral nocturnal prism found in the spray of Yosemite Falls is known as a lunar rainbow. This rainbow is created because of the light cast by the full moon upon the falls. The lunar rainbow can only be seen at a certain time of night on a few nights around the full moon. The magic happens when the lunar rays are properly aligned with the spray of the falls. When there is plenty of water in the falls and a bright full moon, the moonlit spectrum is a sight to witness. This image was made during the full moon in June of 2023 when Yosemite was experiencing a near record spring run-off. All the extra water was overflowing the banks of the Merced River and created the perfect opportunity for a reflection of the falls and the rainbow.
Yosemite Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the United States. As its name suggests, it is the most impressive falls in Yosemite National Park, and possibly the most photographed. Trying to get a rare and less common view of the falls was a challenge I was interested in undertaking. I have spent time in Yosemite Valley, but I had never witnessed this unique spectacle. The camera had no trouble capturing the luminous rainbow, but my eyes were only able to pick out a flicker of light in the spray. As the moonlight continued to move in to position, more of the rainbow filled in across the base of the falls. It was such a joy to see the rainbow glow on the back of the camera screen. To have the rainbow reflected on the still water added an extra bit of synergy to the whole experience.
As always, I hope this image inspires those who see it to seek out the special moments of beauty for themselves.
