Betelgeuse is a red supergiant type of star that is some 700 times more massive and thousands of times shorter-lived than our Sun. Huge, red stars like Betelgeuse live fast and die violently. It is expected to end its life in a supernova explosion sometime in the next 100,000 years and give humanity a spectacular celestial show, before disappearing from our night sky forever.
