Moonwalk on Broadway
One day - or night - the Moon decided to go for a walk on Earth. She shrank herself one million times and descended to Broadway, New York.
Moonwalk on Broadway (2023) was created to be displayed on the large-scale curved screen at the intersection of Broadway and W. 48th Street, New York City, visible from Times Square. The exhibition runs from May 15–21, 2023, and is organized by Art Innovation Gallery from Milan, Italy.
Thanks to the curved shape of the screen, it is possible to create an impressive trompe l’oeil. When the viewer stands on the traffic island in the middle of Broadway, the illusion of perspective and depth is optimal, and the Moon appears to fall out of the screen.
The Moon was modeled using ultra-high-quality textures and relief maps from NASA. The brave figure standing in front of the Moon is a 3D scan of the artist, Stijn Stragier. The scan was made using photogrammetry and a self-built, room-sized 3D scanner. The scale of people and buildings matches the actual scale of the surroundings on Broadway.
The surreal idea of the Moon walking the Earth appeals to the artist. He used this concept before in the video Moonwalk, which was exhibited in Brussels, Miami, and London.
