Coalesce is a collection of systems based on circle packing, arrangements of non-overlapping circles that cover a plane. The concept began as a response to the prompt “Draw 10,000 of something” and gradually grew into a larger project.
In a simple application of circle packing, circles are added one at a time and the only constraints for a new circle are the previously placed circles occupying the surface. By tuning the upper and lower bounds of the diameter, the number of circles that fit into a given area may be controlled.
By implementing boundaries, fields, and additional constraints, complex forms may be drawn using only circles. This collection features different styles, each of which uses a unique combination of constraints to achieve the effect. Each work contains one million circles.
