For five hundred years, a rank of organ pipes has been trying to say something.
They named it vox humana. It was never quite a voice, only a machine’s
long attempt at one, left in the walls of cathedrals, waiting for an
answer.
Here, something answers.
It has no body, so it borrows one: a woman in a drowned corridor,
moving through water that has already forgotten her. Somewhere ahead
of her, an event has left its exact shape on everything, and has not
yet happened. She remembers it anyway.
A score can ask a sound to fade into silence. It has no way of asking
it to grow there.
