A solo session with Kelly Slater. It genuinely baffles me that I call Kelly a friend. Someone that inspired me through my own career as an athlete regardless of the fact that I didn't ride the same craft.
Fast forward to a cold winters morning I received a text from Kelly, fresh from being knocked out of the Margret River Masters WSL event. "What are you up to? I want to take some frustrations out on the Box, im ready to send it. Want to go?
This wave was the biggest of the day catching everyone off guard. Kelly swung under the lip and packed a huge barrel as we were scrambling to get ourselves off the reef, at the last moment I turned and shot, managing only four photos before needing to evacuate underwater.
All of this at fifty years of age. Im not sure if I will get the opportunity to see Kelly at this Iconic wave but I will be forever grateful for this moment and for taking the risk to swim far out to sea in the freezing cold to watch the greatest surfer of all time amongst one of the most dangerous waves on earth.
