Stephen VI 896-897 is the most gruesome, he dug up the rotten corpse of his predecessor and rival and put it on trial. The macabre spectacle, known as the ‘Cadaver Synod’, turned the people of Rome against him. A public uprising deposed him and was later strangled in prison.
