Tulle 034_v2

As an east-coaster living in northern California for seven years, I came to view wildfires with a mix of awe and dread. During the pandemic I set out to process those feelings by making sculptural representations of fire from tulle, a mesh fabric with endless transformative qualities when photographed in windy conditions. I built and photographed several dozen tulle installations in California in 2020, and many are successful images in their own right, but to my eyes none of them truly captured fire. Until I made this image, that is. Created in October of 2021, it feels like a sweet vindication of my original idea. My appreciation for it is only enhanced by the irony that it wasn’t shot in California after all, but on a beautiful beach in North Carolina. 3000x2355
