Ogbanje is a painting drawing from Igbo folklore, where I'm from. In my culture, these were said to be cursed children, forced to torment poor families by dying and being reborn to the same homes again and again until the source of the curse was destroyed. They were said to be cursed, but really, they may have just been sick. Sickle cell was rampant around that time and without knowledge of the sickness, partners would have been trying to have children who would, unfortunately, most likely always be unhealthy. The Ogbanje represent life, and death, and the thread that ties them both. They represent the cycle we're trapped in, and show us the way out.
