AYUBA SULEIMAN DIALLO
(The Muslim prince who became a slave.)
Ayuba Suleiman Diallo (1701-1773) born in Bundu, Senegal (West Africa), was a prominent West African, Muslim-Fulani prince who was kidnapped in America during the Atlantic slave trade, having sold slaves himself. By publishing his memoirs in 1734, Diallo had a significant and lasting impact on the British understanding of West African culture, black identity and Islam. In the early 1800s, proponents of the abolition of slavery cited Diallo as a key figure in defending black moral rights and humanity.
