Monro (Acheiropoieton)

‘Acheiropoieton’ comes from the ancient Greek, meaning ‘made without hand’. An example of an acheiropoieton is the Turin shroud. Historian Ernst Kitzinger said: ‘Either they are images believed to have been made by hands other than those of ordinary mortals, or else they are claimed to be mechanical, though miraculous, impressions of the original.’ Theologically, acheiropoieta are the authoritative images (icons) from which copies can be authentically made. In this sense, digital image distribution might be said to have revived the medieval miraculous.
