FACEPRINTS by Cem Hasimi
1/1/169 | .0869 ETH | Blind Mint | Presented by Plan X Gallery
Do You Know Me?, Cem Hasimi’s first solo exhibition in Italy, explores identity, uniqueness and the changing ways in which we recognise one another.
At the centre of the exhibition is FACEPRINTS, a series inspired by the fingerprint as one of the most individual markers of human identity. Each work begins with a single continuous line, drawn by hand. From this initial gesture, Hasimi uses a custom application, developed with the assistance of AI, to generate a moving field of contours that transforms the drawing into a unique Faceprint.
The resulting works move between portrait and abstraction, human gesture and machine interpretation. Faces emerge, shift and dissolve within dense accumulations of lines, never settling into a fixed image. No two Faceprints are the same; even the same drawing can produce a different configuration each time.
This instability is central to the work. Humans recognise faces; machines recognise patterns. Hasimi places these two forms of recognition in tension, exposing both their proximity and their limits. A face can be identified, mapped or classified, but recognition is not the same as knowing someone.
Rather than using technology to generate a finished image automatically, Hasimi employs it as a tool through which chance, computation and authorship remain in constant negotiation. The portrait becomes less a stable likeness than a field of signals: singular, variable and never entirely resolved.
Do You Know Me? asks what remains beyond identification, and how much of a person can ever be contained in what can be seen, measured or recognised.
