The Adventures of PaintoMime
Presented by SuperRare
In this new body of acrylic on black velvet paintings, David Henry Nobody Jr. treats the surface as a portal between the private unconscious and the strange theater of contemporary life. Known for a practice rooted in performance, persona, embodiment, and social disruption, David brings that same psychic charge into painting, allowing each work to feel both immediate and possessed.
These paintings move between control and surrender. Through translucent veils of color, distortion, humor, and unease surface like signals from beneath the image. The works are delicate in their handling of paint, yet psychologically intense, reflecting an artist attuned to the irrational forces that shape us: desire, shame, fantasy, projection, spectacle, and the endless feedback loop of the internet. If social media has become a kind of collective unconscious, these works feel pulled from that stream and returned through the body.
What emerges is a collection that feels primal and contemporary, handmade yet haunted by the digital world. The body is still present. The mask is still present. The internet is still present. But here, everything is compressed into the charged space of black velvet, where image, instinct, and identity become unstable, alive, and unresolved.
