It was 2 AM in Kuopio, Finland, and I was in the middle of a big freezing lake. The air was chilly. All one could hear is the sound of the wind and ice.
That night, I saw the most incredible Northern lights I had ever seen in my hometown. I had been photographing them for hours and taking lots of different images, but this became the best one.
Everyone who has photographed the Northern Lights knows the feeling when they appear. One becomes so excited for a chance to get something so wonderful that one starts running around and jumping from excitement. Northern Lights are one of the most incredible natural phenomena one can witness in their lifetime.
It’s unusual to get powerful Northern Lights in Kuopio, Finland, but when you get Northern Lights that are shaped like a heart, that’s something else. I had a composition idea that came to me as I started shooting. Later, when the Northern Lights were at their most powerful, I put my camera on the tripod and set it to take images on its own. Meanwhile, I started to walk into the frame while carefully making the footprints in the foreground.
Even though it was cold and I had to stay still while the camera was taking the photos, it was super fun. I was just watching the Northern lights and their beautiful shapes. Whenever they were transitioning into more powerful, I would wish my camera settings to be correct to get the shot.
At one such powerful transition, I saw a heart in the Northern Lights. I could not believe it and wanted to shout with excitement on that windy night. However, I had to stay calm to get a sharp subject in the photograph.
Once I got back to the camera, I was happy to see the heart captured.
So yes, this piece is a single exposure image, and this is why "Love is in the air" is one of my best, rarest shots to date and my SuperRare Genesis.
