Supercanaleta

’Supercanaleta' is part of Ty Lekki's genesis series, Vertigo. This 360-degree panorama is interactive and allows you to scroll around the image giving you that Vertigo feeling when looking down. For the full immersive experience, VR is recommended. This was taken from a bird’s eye view high above the Torre Glacier in El Chalten, Argentina. Experiencing in VR will have you feeling like you’re standing above the clouds at nearly 3000 meters up, halfway between the famous peaks Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. With the West face of Fitz Roy prominent in the image, it reveals the climb to its summit known as the “Supercanaleta”. This climb seems timeless due to its importance in the history of alpinism. This alpine route directly up the west face has to be one of the most legendary routes in the area and perhaps the world. Climbers dream about this route, and you can see it run directly up the west face in the center of the tallest mountain in the image, Fitz Roy. We climbed for three days with our mountaineering and photography equipment up to the peak of Loma Blanca. During chilling winter temperatures and a snow storm at the top. We were able to capture some very unique images of this famous climbing route and this 360 image really shows just how big of an undertaking this route is. This was a dream spot to fly a drone at nearly 2500 meters up. This allowed the drone to fly another 500 meters up and get high enough to reveal the grand landscape that encompasses all 360 degrees of the image. With the Patagonia ice sheet revealed over the towering peaks of Torre Piergiorgio, in the northern part of the image, it really shows just how unique this landscape is. The Patagonia ice sheet is the second largest ice field in the world, outside of Antarctica, with the tall jagged and rugged peaks right off of the ice sheet it really seems something out of a fairy tale. These are no doubt some of the most impressive peaks on the planet and I like to think of it as the adventure capital of the world.
