China Town, New York City – a home within a home. A taste of a land across the seas brought to the big city. These streets are paved with opportunity, of stories, and of struggle. Once nothing more than another path through America, waves of immigrants arrived in New York as the century ticked from 19th to 20th. With them, they brought a little glimpse into their lives back home. The tastes, the smells, the colors, the noise, the people, the culture, the tales, all packed into one town. The iconic red decorations that have almost become a trademark of these streets.
And the people… oh, the people! It feels like a New York City bubble, untouched by the towering skyscrapers surrounding it. The founders of China Town came to America with one dream in common, the dream of opportunity. The American Dream. The dream that hard work can lead to success and happiness. Standing here, patiently observing, painting the picture of the authentic China Town, I can’t help but admire what has been built. I can’t help but think of the stories that remain etched onto every inch of the sidewalk. I can’t help but think of the generations that have worked to make this one of the beating hearts of one of the busiest cities on Earth. I can’t help but think of the tales that are yet to be told. It may be a town by name, but this place has the heart of a country!
