JPEG PHILOSOPHY 101
An Introductory Course in Digital Ownership, Right-Click Ontology & Applied JPEG Metaphysics
Course Description
Welcome to JPEG Philosophy 101, the foundational academic discipline for understanding what happens when a human right-clicks an image and immediately experiences a profound sense of ownership.
This course examines the philosophical, legal, spiritual and frankly questionable implications of digital possession. Students will investigate the ancient question: “If I saved it to my computer, does it belong to me now?”
Through rigorous desktop-based research, students will explore the relationship between seeing, saving, copying, owning and pretending to understand blockchain technology.
COURSE MODULES
01. Introduction to Digital Ontology
What is an image? What is a file? What is mine?
An investigation into the metaphysical transformation that occurs when image.jpg enters the Downloads folder.
02. The Right-Click Method
A practical introduction to the fundamental philosophical gesture:
Right Click → Save Image As → Therefore I Am
Students will examine how the mouse has become the primary instrument of modern epistemology.
03. Digital Ownership vs. Physical Possession
If nobody can touch it, can anybody own it?
If everybody can copy it, can anybody own it?
If you paid for it with cryptocurrency, did you actually own anything?
04. The JPEG as Sacred Object
An interdisciplinary study of pixels, compression artifacts and the mysterious spiritual significance of a 600 KB image uploaded to a marketplace.
05. The Blockchain Revelation
Students will learn how putting a JPEG on a blockchain transforms an ordinary image into an immutable historical artifact, while simultaneously making everyone involved considerably more confused.
06. Copy, Paste & Identity
If two JPEGs contain exactly the same pixels, are they the same JPEG?
If you renamed yours FINAL_FINAL_2.jpg, have you created a new work?
07. Applied Digital Sovereignty
Advanced techniques in declaring ownership without possessing copyright, provenance, physical matter or any clear understanding of what provenance means.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
Right-click with philosophical confidence.
Distinguish between having a file and owning an artwork, approximately.
Explain why copying an image does not necessarily create a new artwork, but definitely creates a new argument.
Use the phrase “on-chain provenance” convincingly at parties.
Spend several hours debating whether a JPEG is art while avoiding the question of whether their own JPEG is good.
Experience genuine existential uncertainty upon encountering Save As.
FINAL EXAM

If you right-click an image, save it to your computer, rename it, upload it to the blockchain and subsequently forget where you saved it...
