September #008. Stone does not remember. It only accumulates. What reads here as memory—the cerulean bloom across the brow, the ochre scatter along the jaw—is nothing more than mineral responding to weather, organism finding purchase on mineral, decades of exposure writing themselves into a surface that never intended to keep a diary. And yet the record is unimpeachable. This face cannot testify to when it was carved or by what hand, but it testifies with total honesty to everything that has happened to it since: which planes caught rain and which stayed sheltered, where lichen found purchase and where it did not, how oxidation moves slower in shadow than in light. The patina is not decoration. It is deposition, and deposition is testimony.
This is the distinction I return to across this period—between marks made to communicate and marks that simply could not help but form. A monument's carved features assert; they were built to say something about power, permanence, memory. But the color that has colonized this face since says nothing on purpose and therefore cannot lie. It simply records exposure with a fidelity no inscription could match. The mournful tilt of the head, the dissolution creeping across strong bone structure—these read as grief only because we bring grief to them. What the surface itself offers is more austere and more remarkable: an accurate, involuntary ledger of time passing across stone, indifferent to whether anyone ever reads it as beautiful.
