the ribs of our savior
didn’t protect any organs
or rise and fall
under the weight of our nightly abyss
though sometimes they did move
splinter or crack
with the tide of indifference
reflecting the gaze of soft termite eyes
on the brink of collapse
most of the time
the illusion of motion
was enough to convince us
we’d gone sailing
