Plein Air Painters - The Privilege of Disorder
Post-painting
Circa 2026
In The Privilege of Disorder, the ceremonial grandeur of ancien régime France collides with the volatile theatre of contemporary civil unrest. Aristocratic horsemen, adorned in the extravagant regalia of a vanished social order, preside over a Paris engulfed by burning vehicles, riot police and the gathering forces of insurrection. In the foreground, a solitary hooded figure confronts this extraordinary convergence of historical privilege and modern resistance, his outstretched arms suggesting both defiance and disbelief.
The painting proposes that history is less a succession of completed events than a continuous negotiation of power. The aristocracy, supposedly consigned to the past, returns as an absurd yet unsettling presence, its elaborate costumes and ceremonial authority contrasting with the anonymous machinery of contemporary state control. The spectacle becomes an uncomfortable reminder that revolutions may overthrow rulers without necessarily dismantling the structures of privilege they represent.
Sweeping passages of white pigment engulf the composition, disrupting the photographic image and dissolving the boundaries between documentation and invention. These painterly interventions resist the authority of the historical record itself. Within this fractured landscape, disorder becomes a privilege unevenly distributed: celebrated when exercised by the powerful, criminalised when expressed by those beneath them. Painting emerges as an act of resistance against the institutions that determine not only who governs history, but who is permitted to represent it.
