Eunice
0x590...155C8
Isaac Wright on ‘Eunice’ was shot on top of the historical Chrysler Building on a cold winter's day in 2022.
I won’t go too deep into the specifics of how we found ourselves up here, but let’s just say it involved some serious research and some free climbing. From south to north on the west side of the building, the eagles are named; Phoebe, Marge, Nelly and Maude. From south to north on the east side; Doris, Gladys, June and of course, Eunice which is the eagle that Isaac is standing on.
I have been staring at these eagles my entire life with a frame stuck in my mind, shot in the 1930’s by Oscar Graubner of Margaret Bourke-White perched on top of one of the eagles. With all the exploration and time spent climbing buildings all throughout the world over the last twelve years or so, I must say, sitting up here and having a cigarette was truly a day I will never forget. Some tears fell as I realized where I was with peers I admire, Emil and Isaac. What a beautiful space to share. We were surrounded by corporate offices that do not usually see people on this balcony, so I knew we had to be quick. I took it all in while I had the time to do so, I knew exactly where I was, my breathing was calm and hands were steady.
This frame rests in the collection titled ‘Breathing Room’ because there is no other way of categorizing such a feeling. So much damn noise down there, so much space up here.
