A great six-spoked wheel turns on a horizontal axle, held between two posts driven into flat green earth. A crank handle waits on the side — the wheel does not spin on its own; something, or someone, turns it. Three creatures ride it: one climbs up the left side, half-animal and rising with effort; one tumbles down the right, upended and falling; and at the very top sits a crowned sphinx-like figure, serene, holding an upright sword. The three are hybrid beings — part beast, part human — caught at the three stations of the cycle: ascent, summit, descent.
