A portrait of Britain’s Cabinet, meeting in the Houses of Parliament, 2023
—
In the year 1536, England was ruled by King Henry VIII. Driven by his thirst for a son and heir, his sights were set on Jane Seymour, hoping she would (where his current wife Anne Boleyn had failed) grant him the coveted male child he desired.
Henry hatched a plan to accuse Anne of adultery and treason. Yet, in this alternate history, Anne discovered Henry's plot and decided to turn his indiscretions and misuse of power against him. She embarked on a mission to dismantle Henry's power. Through secret meetings with allies in politics and religion, as well as a strong alliance with France, Anne gathered support against Henry's rule.
Women who had been involved with Henry came forward, protected by Anne's influence. Formerly loyal advisors turned against him, sparking protests across the land. This led to a stunning turn of events on May 2, 1536, when Henry was arrested and imprisoned by Anne's supporters.
The following day, Anne was crowned as an unconventional queen, breaking from the established line of succession. Her reign brought about positive changes – she passed laws to aid the less fortunate, promoted cooperation in Europe, and notably introduced a form of rule where women were in power.
This unique matriarchal system endured over time, with daughters succeeding their mothers and eventually leading to a matriarchal government that still persists today.
