Corcomroe Abbey, located in a rugged and remote part of Ireland's Burren Region, oozes history amid the ever-changing landscape!
A Cistercian Monastery originally founded between 1180 and 1200 AD, the church and other stone buildings were constructed in the early 13th Century.
It's a great place to explore, especially considering the ornate stonework inside.
Legend has it that the primary benefactor of the Abbey, King Conor na Siudane Ua Briain (Conor O'Brien), King of Munster, had the five stonemasons responsible for this masterpiece put to death to prevent them from building anything else as beautiful.
A graveyard surrounding the Abbey continues to be used, though the area is much more populated than it was 800 years ago.
