Becoming

As though emerging from the earth itself, Becoming presents a portrait of a smooth white face reminiscent of an unfinished, yet intricate, relief sculpture. While the expression of the face is at peace, perhaps not yet self-aware, there is a sense of violence or "pushing through" common to all births as the subject comes into being. Becoming is a metaphor . The act of creation is violent, whether chipping away at a marble sculpture or birthing a human being - but the creator hopes for something beautiful, in the end.
