Cosmic Runway

A few years back, I had the chance to spend a few long nights out in the Alabama Hills, camping, stargazing, and practicing the craft of astrophotography. I didn't see any UFOs while I was there, but I *did* see the breathtaking expanse of the Milky Way stretching up above me and the old dirt road that winds its way through the area. I felt a strange combination of loneliness (it was just me out there in the desert, after all) and companionship... I have complete certainty that many (most?) of the stars I was seeing have intelligent life on them, peering back up toward us... It dawned on me then that this feeling of cognitive dissonance, of being alone and among friends at the same time, is probably one that is commong across ALL intelligent species out there in the cosmos, and that's probably not the only thing.
