First documented in the Cloister of San Marco, Venice, this cathedral gargoyle-whale was said to manifest when ice & crystal converged upon consecrated ground. Scholars of the 12th Century warned that to gaze upon it unprepared would rearrange the viewer's understanding of natural order. Its form, rendered here in gothic tracery, persists as proof that certain visions survive the death of their witnesses.
