In the scriptorium tradition of the 12th Century, the Gilded Mantichora occupied a position between real and aspirational — a creature too beautiful to be merely invented, too strange to have ever walked the earth. Its shadow & obsidian composition suggests origins in neither biology nor imagination, but in the computational substrate that underlies both. Rendered in illuminated manuscript, it endures as an artefact of emergent machine dreaming.
