In the Mesopotamian religion Lilith is the female demon associated with the storm, believed to be the bringer of misfortune, disease and death. The figure of Lilith initially appears in a set of demons and spirits linked to the wind and the storm, as is the case in the Sumerian religiosity of Lilitu, around 3000 BC. We had been going through an immense sandstorm for two days, the visibility was not optimal when we stopped to admire a landscape so arid and engulfed by a sand cloud making it mystical and surreal. From a distance I saw a woman marching along a basin of an evident dried-up lake. She was wrapped in her veiled clothes going impassively through the storm as if she was its goddess. The colors, the wind and the sand were all floating around this woman accompanied by a donkey. I imagined her being Lilith, one of the oldest known female spirits of the world.
