A nod to the story of Iphigenia in Aulis by Greek playwright Euripides, Iphigenia in Algorithm is a digital painting replicating, by human methods, traditionally machined styles of GAN-produced artwork.
It explores what a GAN is not capable of expressing, whether due to limitations of resolution or fidelity (the increasing quality of which suggests a creative arms race). With abstracted shape, primary color, and "not-quite" neo-Classical form, Iphigenia in Algorithm wrestles with our historical and evolving understanding of the artificial.
