Exhausted Horse (with music by Jem Finer)

"Horses" - Patti Smith; "Horse Latitudes" - The Doors; "A Horse with No Name" - America; "Gasoline Horseys" - Sparklehorse; "Wild Horses" - The Rolling Stones; "Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross" . . . ; the horse falls down, it gets back up again. There was a song about that - ‘I get knocked down but I get up again’, "Tubthumping" by Chumbawamba. We are a long way from horses now. A long way from their power and grace and well, their usefulness if you needed to get somewhere, or pull a load, or plow a field, or charge into battle. But as symbols they remain potent: on the one hand galloping freely in our imaginations; on the other broken, through our callousness and inhumanity, like the screaming horse in Picasso’s "Guernica" or Boxer in Orwell’s "Animal Farm".
