Apocalypse Now

Just one year ago, this glacier face was surrounded by black sandy beaches right where the ash-filled waters now envelop. This small strip of land is what remains. Every few months that I revisit Sólheimajökull glacier, the glacier lake continues to gets wider and deeper. The ice continues to break apart from the glacier in gigantic chunks making the lake that much larger and the glacier that much smaller. Within the next few years this entire area will no longer be accessible....because it will all be submerged. Our glaciers are dying...and very soon, these enchanting ice walls will be gone...and with it the very land that we trek upon.
