BUCHA "ROOTS"

This is not merely a photograph. It is a physical manifestation of collective trauma and absolute survival. When the Ukrainian cities of Bucha and Irpin were liberated in the spring of 2022, the world witnessed the unspeakable. Executions of entire families, mass graves, and innocent lives brutally erased. Sitting in front of the news, the psychological weight crushed me. For the first time in 30 years, I wept. I looked at my wife and my son, paralyzed by the agonizing realization: it could have been us. Our city, our bodies. I felt as if I was being cut open alongside my people. I took that unimaginable terror and carried it into the most beautiful, fertile lands of my home to create this piece. It is a self-portrait of a nation's soul. The body is violently dismembered, chopped into pieces, and then brutally stitched back together in the dirt. We were torn apart by atrocities, but sewn back together by an unknown code of sheer will and the power of our spirit. The body is whole again, the society stands—but we will never be the same.
