This the culmination of many experiments with cellular automata, hexagonal tessellation, and kaleidoscope effects. It starts with a simple topological cellular automaton, which creates a sea of undulating pixels across a blue gradient. These pixels are smoothed into a glasslike texture and tessellated with a moving hexagonal pattern. On top of that is a moving kaleidoscope and vignette.
Most of my time creating this art was spent on the sound effects. I played electric guitar with copious delay and reverb effects to create a soothing backing track, which sways from major to minor and back. Meticulously, I arranged sounds of water and ice cracking to sync with the patterns in the visuals. The end result is cold, yet calming, like watching the ocean waves beat against snowing cliffs.
