It is a spirit of Japanese folklore that lives at the bottom of the sea and causes any ship to capsize
whose captain or crew dares to speak to him.
According to the story, when Umibozu was enraged, he asked the crew
a wooden barrel. The creature filled said barrel with seawater to drown the sailors, so that they could not escape.
To avoid the final fate, the only solution was to give him a bottomless barrel.
