Cartesian theatre (derisively named by Daniel Dennett) refers to a view of consciousness where somewhere in the mind all perceptions are delivered as if projected onto a screen, viewed by the conscious agent. A problem appears; the conscious agent (referred to as a tiny human, or homunculus) itself has to process what is on the screen and yet another, smaller, homunculus is needed to become conscious at this level, and so it goes on and on into an infinite recursion.
