Substances, legal or illegal, they all have a story to tell.
MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is one of the most popular recreational psychoactives most commonly sold as "ecstasy" (usually tablets and it's not mdma) or "molly" (usually crystals). It is known for its empathogenic, euphoric, and stimulant effects, and has also been used in psychotherapy. Effects can be ego softening, neurotically based fear dissolution, feelings of emotionally based love and empathy. Lucidity retained, in-depth communication facilitated, present moment awareness heightened; stimulation, mild jaw-clenching and mild to
moderate post-session fatigue. MDMA is *chemically* an amphetamine, but psychologically it is what's known as an empathogen-entactogen. There is some amphetamine stimulant quality left, which enhances the empathogenic quality. The empathogenic quality is basically the ability to communicate things to others, and the ability to feel empathy towards others. Its sort of an "external" quality, that opens lines of communication. The stimulating quality and the empathogenic effect are what most recreational users seem to be after. The entactogenic effect, on the other hand, is an internal quality. Its a sense that the world is sort of "and okay place to be".
MDMA effects 5-HT (serotonin) similarly to the way that amphetamines effect dopamine, by inhibiting the reuptake and causing the release of 5-HT. This effect is somewhat similar to the effect that SSRI anti-depressant drugs have. It also effects the 5-HT2 (psychedelic) and alpha-2 adrenergic (cardiovascular) receptor sites. Also, its effects on dopamine appear, at this point, to be involved both with its neurotoxicity and psychological effects. A primary psychological effect of MDMA is to make the user feel "safe", at peace with the world, pleasantly reconciled to things as they are, and things however they will be. This can remarkably diminish one's ability to make sound judgements during the session, tt becomes easy to want to prolong the MDMA state by taking more and more of the drug (or of other drugs), beyond what you would judge wise or worthwhile when not under its influence, leading to various problems. Concerns about the possibility of serotonin level or serotonin system changes in humans with therapeutic doses of MDMA, some researchers reckon changes can be lessened or prevented by taking a cocktail of antioxidants before, during and after the trip.
