How many things did you let slip by you today?
Not just the small things, no - I’m not talking about leaving the water running while you’re brushing your teeth, or forgetting to unload (or even load) the dishwasher. Nah.
How many times did you forget you were a conscious being today? How many times did you
remember to feel your feet planted firmly on the ground? To appreciate the way your legs connect to your hips; or to be mindful of the stress that you’re carrying in your shoulders?
The sound of the wind rushing through your hair. How did reading that sentence take you away from what you were feeling moments before? Can you articulate it? Did you even FEEL it?
Okay, forget “Hey, I’m a breathing, feeling, sentient creature” for a second. How many times did you have to look up from your phone today, only to forget what you looked up for? How many times did you forget the tip of your tongue was pushed against the roof of your mouth right this second? How many times today did you forget to breathe?
Mindfulness. As an artist, it’s honestly something that I’ve been struggling to find - both in my practice (and in my humanity) for a long time. I think there’s a lot to be said about how much time we spend each day forgetting that we’re actually here. Or at least, that was the underlying idea of this painting, before I put 100+ hours of my life into it over the course of May and June to finish before my very first gallery show in New York. Then - it became a weird, and I’ll be honest; not-entirely-healthy push against my regular day to day life to finish this THING that not only took me away from the people closest to me, but also from smaller tasks I wanted to complete, from healthy eating and from feeling like a Hümban that’s actually in equilibrium. Suffice to say, I missed a lot. How much do Ü?
