Virgil reassures him by explaining that Beatrice entrusted him with the task of being his guide, at the behest of the Virgin Mary and Saint Lucy. Dante, once having listened to Virgil's words, becomes more confident and begins the journey towards the entrance of hell along with his guide. The great poet prays to the seven Inspiring Muses (deities of the Greek mythology), asking them to help him describe what he will see on his way.
