As soon as they cross the entrance, the two poets find themselves in the vestibule of hell, a place characterized by desperate screams and lamentations. In this area the Uncommitted, sinners who in life were not able to decide, express their own opinion or believe in their own ideas, but only accept the will of others, are punished. They are forced to pursue a white flag, as their life has been in vain. Dante and Virgil, upon reaching the bank of the Acheron river, meet Charon, who urges the poets to pull back. Virgil explains to the infernal ferryman that they have undertaken their journey by divine will and asks to be brought to the opposite shore. Dante, overwhelmed by three natural phenomena, an earthquake, a strong wind and lightning, passes out.
