Three years ago, when researching unique and unexplored parts of the world, I stumbled upon a group of islands out in the middle of the Pacific. After learning about the Marquesas Islands, I knew I wanted to venture out there and see what this region had to offer. Unfortunately, a quick search on google didn't yield much information or images, so I knew I was going in blind. The first island I stepped foot on was Nuku Hiva, and I instantly knew the potential here was endless. I spent the next few days driving, hiking, and exploring. I was able to dive deep into the culture and interact with locals who are disconnected from the rest of the world. With a population of just 3,120 inhabitants and only one hotel, it was eye-opening to absorb information and learn the history of the islands and their people.
Nuku Hiva is filled with bays and prominent ridge-lines surrounded by the turbulent ocean. One village named "Hatihe'u" on the north side of Nuku Hiva caught my attention. A single-lane road curved around the edge of the village and continued up the coastline. Each curve exposed a new scene and presented unique photo opportunities. As the sun began to dip, I found myself on the edge of the coastline, surrounded by the most incredible jagged peaks. A view that I had not seen a single photographer capture. A genuine opportunity to get creative and let the story develop. The sunbeams aligned with the peaks, creating a crown display over the bay below. I stood in awe of the scene that set in front of me, with the rays intensifying as the sun dipped lower. With a passion for exploration, I went from a small dot on a map to sunset in one of the most surreal places I have ever visited. The feeling of euphoria overcame me as I knew the months of planning and days of travel had paid off.
