Portraiture is one of my main methods of storytelling. The sitter and the photographer collaborate on an image that is authentic, spirited and cathartic for both parties.
I made this photograph one early morning in Kaolack, Senegal. It on the Eid, the holiday that celebrates completion of the holy month of Ramadan. Soon after the first prayer was done, everyone either stayed behind at the masjid to fellowship with community or head home to eat with family and friends. This young lady and her friends were at a breakfast that I was also attending. I asked her for her photograph and soon a few others joined the line. This blue wall became the Eid studio!
