In Harman's latest digital painting, "Cinema Carcass," from his recent project "The 10th E State," the artist delves into the juxtaposition between artificial intelligence, urban decay, and the reclamation of nature. The painting is an evocative portrait of an eerie, post-human landscape where nature reasserts its dominion over human-made structures. The skeletal remnants of a cinema complex serve as a haunting backdrop to the image, its once lively halls and screens now reduced to lifeless architecture, stripped of its communal joys and cinematic dreams.
However, it is the painting's foreground that captures the viewer's attention and bewilders the mind: a giant eagle, carrying off a set of wheels that could belong to a buggy or a child's go-cart. It's as if the bird, commonly seen as a symbol of freedom and strength, has turned its attention from living prey to the detritus of human civilization. What is the eagle hunting for in this desolate setting if not sustenance? Is it scavenging for pieces of a past existence, or is it an ironic nod to the futility of our materialistic pursuits?
The painting seems to ask: in a world left to abandonment, what becomes of the objects and spaces meant to bring us together? Harman's choice of a retail park setting—often seen as temples of consumer culture—highlights the temporal nature of human endeavors. It serves as a poignant reminder that places created for pleasure, community, and escape can eventually succumb to the inexorable force of time and nature's reclamation.
Through "Cinema Carcass," Harman leverages the cutting-edge techniques of AI and digital painting to deliver a powerful message that transcends the medium. This work is not merely a painting; it is a philosophical question about the sustainability of our civilization's values, the potential fates of our communal spaces, and the natural world's ability to reclaim what was once its own.
