In Patrol Unit, the latest painting from Harman's 10th E State series, a palpable sense of urban decline is conveyed through a masterful use of desaturated hues, capturing the fine line between structure and disintegration.
The scene is anchored by a spectral patrol unit, their forms almost entirely consumed by shadow, alongside a vehicle abandoned to time and neglect—contrasting sharply with the vibrant anarchy of graffiti that has claimed the walls as a medium for silent protest. Harman's painting style is unmistakably unique, weaving together AI and digital painting to create a tableau that is both eerily lifelike and otherworldly.
Overseeing this narrative of decay is a billboard featuring four white, bald male heads. These figures, once emblematic of authority or governmental presence, are now just remnants of a former certainty, their faces and the slogans they once bore fractured and obscured by the elements. The words, meant to convey some official slogan or governmental edict, are now a puzzle of letters, losing their grip on meaning just as the paint peels away from the billboard itself.
Patrol Unit is an existential exploration, presenting a composition that asks us to question the entities that watch over us. The distant patrol unit, seemingly indifferent, becomes part of a larger conversation about surveillance and power. As viewers, the sense of being on the edge of the patrolled and the protected is unsettling. The eroded billboard stands as a metaphor for the fragility of authority's voice, and we are left to ponder the relevance of these silent sentinels. Are they still guardians, or have they too become relics in this world of faded messages and watchful eyes? And in this dynamic, do we find ourselves as the watched, potentially the hunted, within this urban expanse?
