The United States Army conducted the first nuclear detonation on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto desert of New Mexico. With or without irony the project was code named Trinity. The event, cited by some as the beginning of the Anthropocene, marks a profound accretion of humankind’s capacity to destroy itself. On August 6, 1945, detonation of a similar device over Hiroshima, Japan, followed three days later by an additional detonation over Nagasaki, Japan, resulted in the deaths of at least 200,000 people.
