Title: May 3rd - 05:53 Medium: Super-8 film Aspect Ratio: 4:3 Resolution: 2880 x 2160 File Type: H.264 Codec / MP4. Comments: We were flying to Japan, and stopped on a layover in Dubai. The cabin was empty like a ghost town. It was just Roksolana, the flight attendant, and myself. We were crossing between a few time zones on this flight eastward. It would be too late if we tried to make a portrait once we land in Japan. Roksolana asked what I did for a living and I told her that I was an artist working on a worldwide film project. Then, I asked Roksolana if she would be open to being involved in the art project. To create a video portrait of her since we had so much time in flight together. She agreed, and I joyfully jumped out of my seat, opened the taxi and grabbed my camera case. Once I had my cameras in hand I walked to the front of the plane by the cockpit, face down the lane towards the tail, and directed her to approach me from end to end of the cabin. Get as close to the lens as you can. We made the portrait just as the sun was rising. There was a softened golden glow in her smile. We talked for a while and she told me she was from Ukraine. Working on this airline to escape her war torn home. We talked a little while longer about her dreams. Once I sat back down I thought to myself. Wow! I never made art on a plane before, let alone 30,000 ft in the sky! This image represents a portal. The bridge between countries connecting the lands from above. A distance through time.
