We hid our tracks under the storm,
Which washed away in hurtling roars,
And we rushed in gibbering in glee
Like ocean gossips to the shores.
With mirth, and glib, we feigned concern
In pretense of taking shelter.
We cursed “May our health be damned!”
Knowing nothing lasts forever.
Invited, we, to be struck down,
Soaked to the bone in our youth;
Damp air eternal all around,
Your heart to mine aloof.
Every gesture merely play,
We stayed awake through all the night—
That we may be lovers one day—
Telling lies to the dawning light.
Were we more, maybe, at that moment?
Take this to heart, but not too close:
If so, less with the passing years—
Memories age not as we hope.
