Byeolsingut (Village Ritual)

‘Byeolsingut’ is a Korean traditional ritual, thrown by villagers to ask the gods for peace and prosperity. During Byeolsingut, the villagers would honor various spirits that govern their life, while recognizing the toils of the living and the dead. The ritual has its somber moments, but the rest of the ceremony is filled with songs and dances. Byeolsingut not only bolsters a community’s economic visibility, but also strengthens the bonds between the members within. In Paris, October 2022, I had to say goodbye to someone who was my very foundation, my rock and mentor, the greatest artist in the world, and a true friend. The shaman in the painting holds baek-il-hong flowers in his right hand, and carnations in his left. The words of each flower are “yearning” and “reverence.” I hope the message reaches my friend in whatever shape or form. Many miss him dearly. So here is my Byeolsingut — for my dearly departed friend, and for those of us left behind. I’m letting it ring in the way my late teacher has taught me; the only way I know how. I miss you. ’Til we meet again. ____ - Watercolor, ink, colored pencils and markers on paper - The first collector of this NFT will also receive the original physical piece.
