Bouquets and Bombshells is a stop-motion animated collage that combines Marilyn Monroe's first Playboy spread by Tom Kelly, with Georgia O'Keeffe's "White Flower" painting to shed light on the gender pay gap in the arts.
The piece explores how women in the arts are often constrained by limited roles, such as mother or muse and stereotypical subject matter, like painting flowers. The artwork is inspired by the fact that O'Keeffe's “White Flower” painting marks the highest sale by a female artist yet sold for just 10% of the highest sale by a man, exposing the systemic bias against women in the arts.
Ultimately, Bouquets and Bombshells highlights how the gender pay gap exists because of our limited perception of women and their abilities. By addressing this bias, we can create a more equitable and diverse artistic community that celebrates the contributions of all artists, regardless of gender.
