EXWF - Citizen Portrait
Postpainting
Circa 2025
One of the portraits from Harman’s ongoing series, Citizen Portrait is a bleak study in erasure and compliance. The face, half-formed and heavily obscured, carries a barcode across the eyes—a chilling substitution of vision for valuation. The figure is no longer seen, only scanned.
Rendered in aggressive smears of digital brushwork and industrial tones, the portrait resists clarity. It is as if the subject is dissolving into the very systems that define them—data, surveillance, control. The vibrant streaks of red, yellow, and cyan feel less like expression and more like warning signals—glitches in the feed, or the final traces of something once human.
But within the distortion, there is still presence. Citizen Portrait is not just a critique—it is a haunting postpainting of what remains when identity is processed, catalogued, and worn down. Harman captures the ghost in the machine, flickering in and out, refusing to vanish entirely.
